One of the biggest problems that come up when using a computer is storage and memory. Now in my case, I use my iPhone as a portable computer that I use when I'm away from my laptop. It seems the more you use the iPhone, the more space you need to keep apps you use a lot running. This includes updates, downloads, and browsing. Add to this list accessing maps, gps, radio stations and music. So after a while your phone is filled up with so much stuff, you need to start weeding out the things you don't use a lot. The one problem with the iPhone is there is no way to expand the memory. So you are stuck with what you got.
In my case I do a lot of research online for my blogs, or looking up information from Directv. Add to this is big apps like a spreadsheet, database, and word processor and your memory gets used up fast. Another problem that I have is I download a lot of ebooks that I use for my hobbies. For example there is books on several types of programming, Amateur Radio, Blogging, Electronics and Science. All these books are stored on the iPhone for access when I need them because it is convenient and fits in my pocket.
It is like my online library in my pocket!
One problem I've noticed is the iPhone isn't to convenient to move things off the iPhone. Plus you have to move them onto a PC which means you are tied to the PC. For me this isn't in my ideas to using the iPhone as a computer. So I did some more research to see what I could do.
One of the newest technologies that has come along is called the cloud. Now this isn't your everyday cloud in the sky. This is a term that uses the internet as a extension to using the computer. A cloud is software that uses someone else's computer or server as an online storage system. You can access it as a directory online to store music, documents, ebooks or whatever. In my case I use it as an extension for storage of documents off of the iPhone, but can access it when ever via the internet. It helps me manage my space on my iPhone. There are now several different ways to use the cloud on the iPhone. There is a file management app that uses the cloud. There is online storage clouds for ebooks.
The one I use the most is Dropbox. It has an easy to use interface and is pretty reliable. It is offered as a free version of at least 2 gigs (I think..). If you need more you can pay a monthly fee for more space. Another one is at cx.com and there is an app for this one. What I did was see what was available for the iPhone and signed up for them. That way if I run out of space on one, there's another that I can use for free storage. So as long I can access the internet, I can access my data from anywhere. Also it is easy to transfer data from the iPhone to the PC with these. You can also access the data from the iPhone and the PC at the same time. So this is how I have more storage available on my iPhone computer. But be sure you backup all the information! I hope it works for you too!

Hello again! Here is another article that part of my iPhone as a computer series. One thing I noticed immediately after I got the iPhone is when you have to type text. I found out that an old man like me with big fingers has a hard time typing anything on to an iPhone. Don't get me wrong, the keyboard interface that is in the iPhone software is amazing because it has most of the options that you need for when you are typing and it was designed with a small screen on a phone. If you are not a teenager with small and flexible fingers that types texting shortcuts all day and are like me that's used to a keyboard of some sort then I have the answer for you!
About 3 years ago I had a Nokia N800 tablet computer that I used a lot. It's like a small computer in your hand, a little bigger than a cell phone. I used it for everything! It was great except for one thing. It had internet capabilities if you can find WiFI but if you didn't then you were out of luck. My main complaint was it needed phone capabilities! That was when I decided to get an iPhone. Well at that time I ran into the same thing with it's keyboard.
I started doing research into the various wireless keyboards out there and I had 4 must do's that I needed. First it had to be portable and run on batteries, no USB. Second I needed wireless access. Since there wasn't any wifi keyboards then the next thing was Bluetooth. Third it had to small and rugged to take on trips. Fourth it had to be compatible with Windows and my laptop. Now here's what I found.
There was a company with the name called Think Outside. They had a keyboard that was wireless with Bluetooth so it was compatible with any computer that had Bluetooth. The size was about a third smaller than a full size keyboard. It's powered by 2 AAA batteries, so I use rechargeable. It's case is a rugged metal so it's protecting the plastic keys. Now the neatest thing is the case and keyboard bends in half with a rugged mechanism to store in it's metal shell or clamshell case! It is built pretty rugged and so far the mechanism hasn't failed yet. One thing I totally forgot was how to turn it on! So for a long time I didn't use it! I searched the web for a fix and found out the fix was on the back of the keyboard!
This keyboard was put out by Think Outside and iGo so you may have to look around for one. But believe me it is worth the search. You may find one for about $60 on Amazon. The only thing you have to get used to is one function key gets numbers and another is for other symbols which takes a while to get use to. It also has a detachable stand that you can sit the iPhone on and it works out just fine. I highly recommend this one!

Here is one example of the iPhone being less as a phone and more of a computer. One of the things I found out about the iPhone is the bluetooth software doesn't have any software for connecting to a bluetooth enabled printer. You can make a connection if you have a Mac via AirPrint access which will print from the Mac to the printer or have an Apple printer. Now if you are like me and you are a Window Vista user you are pretty much out of luck using a standard window printer. I did some research into this problem to see if anybody had some kind of fix.
Here is what I found was there is a company out there called PrintCentral with an app by the same name.What you do is bight the app and install it on the iPhone, in my case an iPhone4s. Follow the instructions which are basically get the Windows software drivers from PrintCentral and install it on the PC. Now you first need to have a wireless or USB printer working on the PC to start with with it's software already installed and working. Next you have to have a network connection of some sort via wifi also running on the PC. Then you need to have a network connection via wifi to the iPhone on the same network. From that point on as long as the PC is running on wifi and the phone is connected to wifi, what ever you tell the app to print, it will be printed to the printer!
Problem solved! Now I can be outside working on Apple's iPages word processor writing an article and if I need a printout, it will print from my iPhone to the printer ready for me to pick it up. This is just one step in having my mobile iPhone business be done all from portable phone source! If this solution was helpful leave me a comment!
